Probiotic support for a balanced gut microbiome.

Focus area: Gut & Digestion

At a glance

  • One capsule holds seven live organisms. Six of them are bacteria. They share one combined total of 133 mg and 20 billion live cultures, not broken out one by one. The seventh is a yeast, Saccharomyces boulardii. It is listed on its own at 200 mg and 3 billion. A strain is one exact type of bacteria, like a specific breed. 30 capsules per bottle.
  • Early, limited support for the gut lining's normal barrier function. It comes from a different product, not this one. Over 14 weeks, 23 healthy men in hard training took a daily probiotic. They showed more support for that barrier work than men on a look-alike dummy capsule. But those were different strains. Only 23 men took part, all adults in hard training. And a probiotic maker paid for the study. It may not carry over to this bottle, or to you.*
  • Early research on normal muscle recovery after hard exercise. Reviewers pooled 35 small studies of healthy adults who work out. A daily probiotic went along with a bit more support for the body's normal recovery after a hard workout. Read it lightly. The reviewers graded that result low quality because the studies did not agree. Two other muscle measures showed no clear change. No study tested this blend. And no one under 18 took part.*

*Supports normal, everyday function in people who are already well. It is not a treatment for any health condition. It is not a promise about how you or your child will feel. No study behind these lines tested this seven-organism blend. The research we checked was done in adults. Six of the seven organisms have no amount of their own on this label. So we cannot show that one capsule delivers what any study used. Live cultures pass through rather than settle in, so whatever they do, they do while you take them.

Proprietary Blend

133 mg (20 Billion CFU††)

Structure / Function

Six kinds of live bacteria share one listing here: 133 mg, at 20 billion CFU, a count of live organisms. That grouping makes it a proprietary blend, so a capsule cannot show how much of each one you get. All six are normally part of a healthy gut, the mix called your microbiomeThe community of trillions of bacteria in your gut that help with digestion and immune balance.. They pass through, not settle in.

— Lactobacillus acidophilus (La-14)

Structure / Function

La-14 is a strain of lactic-acid bacteria. That is the family behind yogurt, kefir, and other tangy foods. It also lives in the human gut. La-14 is the exact strain picked for this blend. While it is there, it sits with the bacteria you already host, the normal mix called your microbiomeThe community of trillions of bacteria in your gut that help with digestion and immune balance..

— Bifidobacterium bifidum (Bb-06)

Structure / Function

Bifidobacteria are one of the main groups of bacteria in the lower gut. They settle in early in life. Most adults carry them too. They are part of your microbiomeThe community of trillions of bacteria in your gut that help with digestion and immune balance., the normal mix of bacteria your body hosts. Bb-06 is the exact strain used in this capsule.

— Lactobacillus rhamnosus (GG)

Structure / Function

GG is a strain of lactic-acid bacteria. That is the family behind yogurt and other tangy foods. GG was first found in the gut of a healthy person in 1983. It is one of the most widely sold probiotic strains. We hold no verified human research we can apply to this capsule. So we name no benefit for it.

— Lactobacillus paracasei (Lpc-37)

Structure / Function

Lpc-37 is a strain of lactic-acid bacteria, the kind used to make yogurt and other fermented foods. This family also lives naturally in the human gut. Lpc-37 has been studied by itself in healthy adults. Those studies did not show a clear result, so we name no benefit for it. It is simply a normal gut resident.

— Bifidobacterium lactis (Bl-04)

Structure / Function

Bl-04 is one named strain of Bifidobacterium. That group of bacteria lives in the lower gut, part of the mix called your microbiomeThe community of trillions of bacteria in your gut that help with digestion and immune balance.. The group is most common in babies and stays part of that mix as people grow up. Like most probiotic strains, Bl-04 passes through while you take it rather than moving in for good.

— Lactobacillus plantarum (Lp-115)

Structure / Function

Lactobacillus plantarum is one of the lactic-acid bacteria, the kind that gives fermented foods their tang. It turns up in sauerkraut, kimchi, and sourdough. It also lives naturally in the human gut. Lp-115 is the exact strain used here. We hold no verified human research on Lp-115 by itself, so we name no benefit for it.

Saccharomyces boulardii

200 mg (3 Billion CFU††)

Structure / Function

Not a bacterium at all. It is a yeast, a cousin of baker's yeast. It does not settle in the gut. It passes through. On this label it stands on its own, at 200 mg and 3 billion CFU. We hold no verified human research we can point to for it, so we name no benefit.

Pro Bio Shield holds six kinds of live, friendly bacteria plus a friendly yeast. These organisms travel through the gut. They keep company with the ones already living there. They are visitors passing through, not permanent residents. The area with the most human research behind it is the gut lining's own normal barrier function. That is the everyday job the cells lining the gut already do. There is also some support for normal muscle comfort and recovery after hard exercise. But that work was done in trained adult athletes, mostly men. No children took part. A few studies point to the body's own antioxidants, the natural cleanup crew that helps keep normal day to day balance. Those results disagree with each other. The study closest to this mix found no antioxidant change at all. So we hold that one loosely. Three honest limits apply to all of it. Every one of those studies used different bacteria than the six on this label. None of them tested a bacteria plus yeast pairing the way this bottle is made. And the label lists one combined total of 20 billion CFU, a count of live organisms, instead of an amount for each one. So there is no way to show that a capsule gives you the amount that was studied.

How do I take Pro Bio Shield, and how should I store it?

The label serving is 1 capsule per day, or as your practitioner recommends. Don't take more than the label serving unless they tell you to. If they've given you a different amount or schedule, follow their directions. Ask them before opening a capsule, and always ask first if it's for a child.

Store it the way your bottle says: keep it in the original bottle with the cap closed tight, and out of reach of children. Live cultures don't hold up in heat or damp air, so a hot car or a steamy bathroom shelf is the wrong home for this bottle. A cool, dry spot is better. If you notice anything that doesn't feel right after taking it, stop and tell your practitioner.

Why doesn't the label say how much of each strain I'm getting?

Because six of the seven organisms are grouped into one number: 133 mg, 20 billion CFU. That stands for colony-forming units, just a count of live organisms in a serving. A label that gives one number for several ingredients instead of listing each one is called a proprietary blend. The maker doesn't publish the split, so one strain could be most of that 20 billion while another is a sliver. We'd rather tell you that than write around it. It also sets a limit on this page: when a study tests one strain at one measured amount, we can't line that up with a capsule that doesn't give us amounts. The yeast, Saccharomyces boulardii, is the one line here with its own numbers, 200 mg and 3 billion CFU.

Will I notice anything, and when?

We can't tell you, and we'd rather say so than guess. The studies behind this page checked lab readings and surveys at set check-in points after a stretch of weeks, most of them about 5 to 17. None of them reported a day-one result. So we have no honest basis for telling you when, or whether, you'd feel a difference. If you're watching for a change and nothing shifts, tell your practitioner. Don't take more than the label says on your own.

Can my child take it?

That's a call for your practitioner, not for a label. The research behind this page was done in adults, so it can't tell us what these live organisms do in a child, or what amount, if any, would be right for one. Please ask at your next visit before giving this to a child.

Can I take it with my medications or my other supplements?

Ask your practitioner or pharmacist first. This is a probiotic. It contains live organisms, and that's worth a second look next to a prescription. It's also worth asking whether to space it apart from other things you take during the day. Bring your full list of medicines and supplements to your visit, or send it over ahead of time. Talk with your practitioner before you start if you're pregnant or nursing, if it's for a child, or if the person taking it has a weakened immune system or a central line (a long-term IV tube that stays in a vein).
